Faculty Profile

Derek Stults
NMS Percussion Faculty

Derek Stults is excited to be on faculty with the New Music School, and enjoys working with percussion students of all ages. He firmly believes that success comes from a strong knowledge of fundamentals and technique, as well as a positive and supportive work environment. Percussion students at the New Music School will be exposed to numerous methods of approaching traditional musical concepts, involving movement, vocalizations, and theory.

Derek is a certified K-12 music educator in public schools, and currently focuses on percussion instruction in private and group settings. Current and former students have participated in IMEA ensembles and have gone on to continue their musical studies in college. While an adjunct professor at the Chicago College of Performing Arts, he taught percussion methods and pedagogy to future educators. His service with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago program, MusiCorps, has taken him into the elementary schools and city colleges of Chicago to share his knowledge and love for music with people of all backgrounds and ages.

Derek is Principal Percussionist with the Battle Creek (MI) Symphony and holds positions with the Evansville (IN) Philharmonic, Southwest Michigan Symphony, and the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He has played with the Colorado Symphony, Elgin Symphony, the National Repertory Orchestra, has attended the Pacific Music Festival (Sapporo, Japan), the Aspen Music Festival and received a fellowship to attend the Tanglewood Music Center in Boston. This season he has been engaged to play Russell Peck's percussion concerto, "The Glory and the Grandeur," with the Battle Creek Symphony. Derek earned his BM in Music Education and Percussion Performance from the Hartt School, University of Hartford (CT), his MM in Percussion Performance from DePaul University (IL), a Professional Studies Diploma in Orchestral Studies from the Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University (IL) and has studied with Vadim Karpinos (Chicago Symphony), Ed Harrison (Lyric Opera), Ted Atkatz (Former Principal, Chicago Symphony), Eric Millstein (Lyric Opera), and Benjamin Toth (Percussion Group of Cincinnati).
