ABOUT

While earning his Bachelor of Music in Jazz Studies from Northern Illinois University, Casey Nielsen studied both classical and jazz guitar with internationally renowned guitarist Fareed Haque. Following graduation, he continued his classical studies for three additional years with Denis Azabagic at Roosevelt University.

Casey maintains an active and versatile performance career as both a classical and jazz guitarist. As a classical soloist, he has presented recitals throughout the Chicago area, including performances at Baker Memorial Church, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, North Shore Baptist Church, the Elgin Public Library, the Northbrook Public Library, the Fabyan Park Japanese Garden concert series, and Musical Offering’s Music on Madison series.

Since forming in 2014, the Lapis Trio has performed at venues including the Chicago Botanic Garden, The Jazz Estate, and the Glen Ellyn Jazz Festival. Their 2019 recording, The Travelers, led to performances and educational workshops in Louisiana and New Orleans, including appearances at the University of Southern Mississippi, Louisiana State University, and SideBar NOLA.

In 2024, Casey served as Music Director for Chicago Tap Theatre’s October tour across Colorado and Wyoming. In 2025, he toured throughout the Midwest with the Fareed Haque Group.

As a jazz guitarist, Casey has performed at many of Chicago’s premier jazz venues, including Andy’s Jazz Club, Fulton Street Collective, the Green Mill, the Jazz Showcase, Merriman’s Playhouse, and The Whistler. He is active both as a bandleader and as a sideman with ensembles throughout the United States.

To start lessons with Casey, NMS will set up an initial private lesson with you. After the initial lesson, you will be given the opportunity to enroll with Casey or have another initial lesson with a different faculty member.
