Beacon Academy

New Music School and Beacon Academy partner to establish a cutting edge music program, featuring teachers from the music industry. This Fall, students will work with recording artist Akenya in a Song-Writing course. Students’ will learn to compose lyrics and structure in a preferred genre while exploring the best songwriters. Each student will perform their work for the class. In addition to those who take the song-writing class, while Akenya is in residence, she will offer voice lessons to students interested in the genres of popular and jazz voice. Offerings include:

OFFERING AT BEACON ACADEMY | Specializing in preparing students to reach their highest potential on their instruments and helping students with a plan to audition into the finest music institutions, NMS will begin to offer private lessons at Beacon Academy to help fulfill the needs of its students. For now, we would like to offer students Piano, Voice and Flute lessons. We have faculty for all instruments, so if demand presents itself for lessons on another instrument, we will be more than able to provide instruction at Beacon Academy. If you are interested in taking private lessons, please fill out the form on the website provided above.At a parents request, NMS can provide Beacon Academy current student references.

HOW DO I SIGN UP? | The process is very simple. Before we ask new families to commit to a session of lessons, we want to make sure the student and teacher relationship is a strong one. So, we ask you to pay for one single lesson with the teacher. If it all goes well, then you can sign up for a session of lessons. ABOUT AKENYA | Akenya is a 25-year-old multi-genre singer, pianist, composer, and arranger who is pursuing her dream of becoming a world-renowned, professional musician. A graduate of New England Consevatory's jazz performance program, her music places a strong emphasis on jazz and the culmination of hip-hop, funk, pop, classical, world music, and other loves of hers. In the jazz world she has worked with and performed for the likes of Esperanza Spalding, Fred Hersch,Vijay Iyer, Jason Moran, Luciana Souza, and Dave Holland to name just a few. She is also well known in the Chicago hip-hop and soul scenes and has collaborated with some of the city’s leading artists including Chance the Rapper, Noname, Smino, Saba, Eryn Allen Kane, Donnie Trumpet, and Jean Deaux. Akenya is currently working on a full LP, Moon in the 4th, as a follow up to her debut EP, Overcome, which was released in 2010.This new album will feature all originals, including her latest single “Disappear,” which premiered this November.
